Beginning 2 Dec 08, I am offering you a new program for afterschool activities at Snacks Crossing Elementary School. I have been involved in TKD for 5yrs as a student, competitor, and coach. I have been teaching for 4yrs. I have 9yrs military experience, and have trained troops on four continents. I have taught Tae Kwon Do at both Eagle Creek and Fishback Creek Elementary Schools, located here in Pike Township. The impact on schools through the martial arts is such that the kids learn to become more involved. They develop courtesies such as, raising their hands to ask questions. They become practiced in focusing their energies and thoughts. In addition, through a series of pre-established, but attainable goals, they develop self-confidence and self-esteem. They earn the rank of yellow belt, green belt, etc. They become martial artists. This has great meaning and importance to the individual. Self-esteem, self-respect, self-discipline, self-confidence, these are rewards greater than any trophy that is placed on a shelf or wall. These are traits, which they will carry with them not only in their school years, but also throughout life. I feel very strongly about the benefits, both physically and mentally that the martial arts and Tae Kwon Do offer. I believe that this program and its benefits would be an asset to you and your child.
Tae Kwon Do is an amalgam of several different ancient regional Korean arts of self-defense combined into one in 12 April 1955, specifically for the South Korean Army. Translated literally, it means "art of the hand and foot." This form of martial art is based upon symmetrical body exercises optimized for unarmed self-defense and counter attack. Additionally its teachings draw upon a rich heritage and philosophy that focuses upon self-restraint, self-esteem, respect, kindness, obedience, and humility. Emphasis is also placed upon control, coordination, and physical dexterity Students begin instruction with basic techniques and concepts, following a structured schedule. After students master the fundamentals, they progress to more challenging and demanding skills. Comprehensive tests of knowledge and ability are given. Mastery of the material is awarded by a belt, and certificate of rank. The attainment of a "Black Belt," often misunderstood as the ultimate goal, is the student's entry to a level of challenges that may, and often does, last a lifetime. This Afterschool Program is in 50-minute sessions, and will cover the basic techniques used in Tae Kwon Do as well as its general knowledge. A typical 50 min training session will consist of the following:
André Parker is the primary instructor. As needed, he will be assisted by other instructors and/or students from Cross Roads Martial Arts.
